So true about human condition... you've got to find something that people relate to...

I'm going to have to check out the cabbie blog as I'm sure the cabbies I've used before on trips and in D.C. would have interesting things to say about me. His blog sounds almost like the HBO show "Taxicab Confessions," which was all about seeing how people live out their lives and getting a moment to glimpse behind-the-scenes.

I'll be checking out the avocado blog. It sounds silly but really everyone out there can absolutely relate. How many times have we bought veggies and fruit wanting to use it right away, but having to wait until the right moment.

There seem to be quite a few blogs out there related to food, but you won't catch me writing one as I'm not much of a cook. Maybe mine can be all the creative dishes that you can do with a microwave and a few basic ingredients.

I think the key to building an online community is to discuss common human conditions, even if the context is unusual or extraordinary.

Good example: the blog <a href="http://dccabbie.blogspot.com/" rel="nofollow">"Diary of a Mad DC Cabbie"</a>. This guy writes about hookers, crack whores and lonely fat guys looking for action. Ultimately, he's writing about desire and loneliness, with a heavy hit of humor. And that's how he builds -- and keeps -- his audience.

On the silly side, I'm doing a week-long photo blog on <a href="http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=11945&id=5947054827" rel="nofollow">Facebook</a> that follows the ripening process of an avocado. It's completely stupid, but it documents common themes like anxiety, anticipation and (hopefully) fulfilment.

You're so right! It's now so easy to publish and get the word out. There's no bureaucracy and you get to speak directly with your audience.

I gotta admit your site makes me wish I was living in Silver Spring. But alas, I'm in the 'burbs.

It's not just about news coverage. Yes, you do that, but you really build community and keep your community informed.

I think blogging has moved away from a writing genre. Instead, it's become a tool by which anyone can self-publish on the cheap.

And just like self-published books, blogs can be about anything: personal musings, favorite recipes, product promotion, etc.

In my case, I used blogging tools (specifically, WordPress, Flickr and YouTube) to generate a daily news website for downtown Silver Spring. Those tools allow me to provide frequent news coverage at very little cost.
